Mixtape Mondays: Ghosts

I’ve been hard at work the past week writing my section introductions for What a Woman is Worth, and by that I mean, “having emotional breakdowns and hardly writing at all.” I am faced once again with ghosts of my past, and I will exorcise them– turn them from passive memory into active story, and I will be well– but the getting there is damned hard.

So this week’s theme is “ghosts.” For those interested in joining the blog link-up, take inspiration from these songwriters’ different uses of the ghost metaphor– a thing, person, or memory that haunts you; an emptiness or fear inside you; a love lost; a past to be left behind; an intangible longing. And keep in mind that ghost stories don’t necessarily have to be sinister or sad– there can be holiness raised from darkness, and spirit reborn.

  1. Oh man–I know what that’s like. Hang in there, hun, and hope you write through those ghosts like a headlight blazing through mist.

  2. Favorite ghost ALBUM – Ghosts Upon the Earth by Gungor.

This is one of the best thematic albums I’ve heard in forever….. Starts with creation, goes through fall of man and redemption. Good stuff. If you have the time and can listen straight through, it’s impactful.

I sent you a link on Spotify, but can’t figure out how to share that here, so I’ve got a link to a single track from youtube.

    Enjoying your playlist right now.

    • by the way, any resemblance between the woman in the with arms raised during the “like a woman… searching and finding love” lyric and your “What a Woman is Worth” cover is purely coincidental — I didn’t look at this track until after I posted it.

  3. “Is There a Ghost” by Band of Horses. http://youtu.be/QremHCvOG-I

  4. “There can be holiness raised from darkness and spirit reborn.” – Amen!

  5. I love Sleeping at Last’s album Ghosts. It’s been a long time since I listened the whole way through but back in the day, it transported me to another place.

Keep writing and fighting, my friend. xo

  6. No musical comments to add here, just a word of encouragement to YOU – because you can do this, you are doing it, it will be beyond good, and I’m over here in CA shouting down those ghosts, telling them to get the hell outta your head.

  7. “Living with Ghosts” by Patty Griffin; the whole album is amazing. In the name of Jesus, may you be healed, set free, and full of the right words.

  8. Love these Mixtape Mondays. My favourite ghost song is by a Canadian band, Wintersleep. It’s called Weighty Ghosts. Here’s hoping “those goddamn clouds” move away soon.

  9. I can’t think of any current beloved songs that reference ghosts, but my favorite song of middle school was sung as one: “I’ll Be There” by the Escape Club. Now that I’m thinking about it, I think I’d like to hunt it down and hear it before I listen to your recommends.

Also, I am thinking of you, and wish you fortitude as you face these ghosts.
