Mixtape Mondays: Winter

Once upon a time I liked to share the best blogs I was reading; once upon a time I actually had time to read blogs. Nowadays I am working a lot, blogging a little, and reading blogs next to never. But I always listen to music. A lot of music. A lot of good music.

And I still like to share the best.

So I’m going to try out a weekly thing, alliteratively titled (as we do), “Mixtape Mondays” and centered on a theme according to my particular whim. It’ll be just like the kid who used to crush on you in high school did, only less hormonal pining. Maybe.

We’ve got at least a month of winter left, eh? Bundle up with good tunes.

What are your favorite winter songs?

  1. Oh snap. That is a cool app. I love that you can just embed songs into your blog. Nice.

I also know that I owe you a blurb.

    Im on it.

    Kinda. :)

  2. To add to your already awesome winter playlist:
“Winter Winds” by Mumford & Sons
    “Winter Snow” by Audrey Assad
“Footprints in the Snow” by the Vespers
Also, I know it’s not February yet, but “feburary” by Gregory Alan Isakov is a really good winter song, too. :)

    • Good ones. I see we’re still arguing over our boyfriend. I may have to make a February themed list just so I can include that one and The Avett Brothers’ “February Seven.” So many boyfriends, so little time. ;)

  3. Very nice playlist there, Tamara.

Always been a huge fan of putting together mixtapes for various occasions/settings (ie, summer road trip, etc.) In fact, one of my favorite Christmas gifts this year was unexpected – a mix-CD with songs from 2002/1992/1982/1972/1962 from a business colleague (yeah, another numbers geek).

For a winter list of my own, I’d definitely have some older stuff, including:

The Only Living Boy in New York (Simon & Garfunkel) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IwYQ1Vqf_4

Tenth Avenue Freeze Out (Springsteen) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5hgaIMDNpI

California Dreamin’ (Mamas & Papas) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN3GbF9Bx6E

And last but certainly not least, The Parting Glass. The first link is the Clancy Brothers version that I grew up listening to (I picture my dad and his brothers drinking together with this one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCtU737bsJY The other link is the Wailing Jennys version, which you are more likely to be familiar with: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4egb2gpIg4

“Good night! And joy be with you…..”

  4. Here’s a few:
    •Wintersong, Sarah McLachlan
•In the Bleak Midwinter, Sarah McLachlan
•Warm Whispers, Missy Higgins (not technically “winter” but warm…)
•Three Generations, Hawksley Workman (a song that reminds me of my mom and grandma cooking Christmas dinner)
    •Song for a Winter’s Night (Reid Jamieson)
