I Work Alone (with a Little Help)

I work alone.

Sixty-five women entrusted me with their most personal stories, and I read them, every one. I read every story of neglect, of abuse, of harm, and of hurt. And their meaning infiltrated my mind, and their pain weighed down my heart. And I should have known when I read that first story and had to shut myself in the bathroom to sob and to plead for His presence, His comfort, His strength—I should have known. This job would be too much for me.

I work alone.
